The newest addition to the awe-inspiring views of the Grand Canyon as the Grand Canyon skywalk which is a glass skywalk that Jets 4000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor. This technical marvel was commissioned by the Hualapai Indian tribe and opened to the public in March of 2007. When standing on it, the height from the skywalk to the canyon floor exceeds that of the world's tallest skyscraper.
The skywalk sticks out 65 feet into the canyon and is composed of glass on the walls and floor giving you a breathtaking view. While it might seem a little scary to stand on it, it can hold 70 tons which is the equivalent of about 800 people and is built to withstand 100 mph winds as well as a magnitude 8 earthquake. The skywalk sticks out over a side canyon, as opposed to the main one that has the Colorado River but does give you a great view of the main canyon.
While the Grand Canyon skywalk in itself is amazing, there is actually future plans to add in a movie theater, museum, gift shop, VIP lounge and many restaurants. There's even plans for an outdoor restaurant where visitors can dine at the rim of the canyon. The plans of the Hualapai tribe are to open up a large stretch along the South rim which was previously not accessible and to populate it with golf courses, restaurants, hotels and even a cable car to get visitors down to the river.
You can get to the Grand Canyon skywalk through the Grand Canyon West terminal. To drive in from Las Vegas will be about 120 miles and include some rough road.
